COLLEGE AUTONOMY IN PERIL?
WISH YOU A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012
S D S Autonomous College , Shreeramnagar, GARIVIDI, Vizianagaram District was one of the colleges that was accorded Autonomous status in June 1987. Autonomy was extended to it twice and it continues even today. NAAC has accredited the college with B++ Grade. The college is managed by M/s FACOR, Garividi, and named after the founder of FACOR Late Sriman Seth Durgaprasadji Saraf. The college enjoyed unique distinction for the quality of instruction provided and the values it maintained in turning it to an institute that won laurels across the country. There was a time when it is deemed to be a privilege to get admission in this college.
Special Drive
The college in its wisdom (or lack of it?) recently advertised through News Papers about the Special Drive Examinations scheduled to be held in February 2012. These examinations are for those candidates who failed in one or more subjects and could not complete their degree from 1987-2011. It is learnt that there are nearly 1000 candidates of the above category. The Andhra University it seems has permitted such a special drive on collection of Rs.1000/- as fees (irrespective of the number of subjects one has failed) per candidate.
So far 88 candidates only have opted for this special drive examinations. In their anxiety to swell their kitty the college is addressing individual letters to all the remaining 912 candidates to join the special drive by paying Rs.1000/- per candidate.
Pandora’s Box
During the period 1987-2011, the college exercising its Autonomy and in conformity with the regulations of the parent university from time to time has changed the pattern as well as conduct of the examinations and the syllabus many times. The special drive if it means to conduct examinations in the subjects failed require multiple question papers in different subjects as per the syllabi at the time of failure. When the management of the college was confronted with this Herculean task their stoic response is
“We cannot any way provide them jobs let us at least award degrees for all the failed candidates through this special drive”
This is a disgusting, un-academic, nonsensical response to say the least. If all the candidates join the special drive, the number of question papers to be set and the examiners for assessing these papers would be enormous. The college is not prepared to get into such details except collecting the fees and declaring them pass.
If this special drive is not stopped in time it would tarnish the fair name of the reputed college. In future, having tasted the first blood of 10 lakhs of rupees, hereafter the college may advertise for admissions and assure the prospective candidates of certain pass and degree certificates, sans exams internal or external, sans instructions, by paying stipulated fee.
All right thinking persons should look into the evil designs and act to stop this despicable special drive in order to uphold the lofty ideals for which colleges were granted Autonomous Status.
